Hard times have fallen on the automotive service industries. Competition is unbelievable!!! The ability to make a profit from the sale of tires, brake jobs and mufflers is almost impossible. At my shop in Indianapolis, Indiana, to be competitive on a brake job we must sell the Job for around $70.00 Dollars per axle. It takes approximately an hour to install a set of front brake pads. The brake pads on average cost $20.00. The approximate gross profit is $50.00 Bucks’ Take out labor and your overhead and you are lucky to make $25.00!!! Plus we are starting to see a lot of customers trying to install the parts themselves or have their brother or a friend do it. I know a lot of us try and sell additional services to the customer but it is often difficult or they just do not have the money! In the current recession, most shop’s sales and profits are collapsing. I have added the following to my shop. WHEEL REPAIR!!! This has kept my head above water during the last 24 months. Now let me explain the basics for this new service. 1) Minimal competition. Look in your yellow pages and compare the competition in your particular service sector. Now look under wheel repair. Does anybody in your town or city even offer it? Compare the number of auto service shops in a 10 mile radius, and then compare the number of wheel repair shops. You will find very little competition on a service that is sorely needed. 2) Profitability. The average cost of a wheel repair is $125.00. Your actual material cost (paint, filler, miscellaneous sanding products, etc.) is normally under $ 5.00 per wheel. You can also charge for mounting and balancing. 3) Customers savings. The cost of a new Alloy aluminum wheel is $400-$500 at a dealer. If it is an exotic wheel, BMW, Volvo, Mercedes, etc., the cost can be well over a thousand dollars per wheel. Also, used wheels are in very short supply. During the pot-hole season, you can’t even find an after market wheel such as Keystone or Transwheel! I find it amazing when potential customers call us and have not been able to find a wheel. They are glad to purchase from you because of this. 4) Ease of adding this service to your existing operation. If you have a standard mechanic background you can be easily taught Engineered Wheel Products Program. You probably have the basic equipment in your shop to add our Wheel equipment such as lifts, tire changer and balancer. You will need a work area of 10’X 14’ to set up your wheelwright shop. .5) Minimal start up cost. What others would charge you in franchise fees; you could buy all the equipment needed to get your business up and running. We sell you only what you want to purchase to start your business. After you get a feel of your market, we have the service equipment needed to expand your business. 6) Training is part of our services. We will train you on how to use our equipment. Plus we will support you with any questions that you may have by phone, e-mail and by news letters sent to you. Also, we will list you as a Professional Wheelwright in your State on our website with full information and Internet link if you so request. 7) We handle equipment from all over the world. You are not limited to just one style of machine. We search the world to give you quality equipment at the best price possible.
